External Version

At my 36 week appointment we learned that baby girl was breech; with her head up to the left and her body curving across the top of my stomach and back down the right side. My midwife talked to us about doing an external version where the dr manually moves the baby into a head down position. I was nervous but the risks seemed low and I wanted to at least attempt to avoid a c-section. We scheduled the version for the next week.
Well... from the time we learned she was breech until my version (last night) we attempted some ways to get baby to flip on her own. (Like laying with my butt higher than my heart, applying something cold to the top of my stomach to get her to move away, talking or playing music near the lower part of my stomach, etc...) She definitely moved during our attempts, but didn't flip. I could tell that she was happy where she was and that my methods weren't going to work.
We arrived at labor and delivery to get ready for the version last night about 5:30. I was set up in a triage room and they hooked me up to the fetal heart monitor and got an IV tube inserted. I wasn't actually receiving any IV fluids, it was all precautionary in case the baby became distressed. The dr did an ultrasound and confirmed that baby girl had not moved at all, she was in the same position as before - that little stinker!
After monitoring my blood pressure and the baby's heart rate I was given a shot to help relax my uterus. A few minutes later and we were ready to begin. I had one dr on my left, one on my right, a nurse at my feet, and hubby sitting near my head. The dr on my right pressed the baby up and around while the dr on my left guided the baby's head down. It was incredibly uncomfortable and I wasn't sure I could handle it. I looked at the nurse and she told me to take a deep breath. Well, I did, and then it was over. The ultrasound was still on and we could all see that baby was now head down - thank god!
After the version was over baby and I were monitored for about 45 minutes to make sure she wasn't too stressed and resumed her normal pattern of movements. We ended up getting the okay to go home a little after 8 pm, so we were at the hospital about 2 1/2 hours but the actual procedure of moving the baby probably only took one minute. I was completely exhausted afterward and ready to go home but so happy and relieved that baby flipped and was doing okay.
I'm nervous about whether she will stay put but my fingers are crossed. I have my 38 week appointment in a few days so we shall see...
I can feel the difference in how she's positioned now verses before the version but every time she starts moving and grooving I'm convinced she's headed back to her old position. :) Whatever happens will happen and I will be okay as long as she stays happy - even if she moves back and I have to do a c-section. Either way I can't believe I'll be meeting my daughter sometime within the next few weeks!
