35/35

Thirty five weeks pregnant and 35 days to go! Wow, I can't believe it. Only one more week of work before my maternity leave starts. I remember a few months ago thinking that it would be so long before this point and now looking back I can't believe how fast the pregnancy has gone.

Well... I do have gestational diabetes. I took a nutrition class on Sept 1st and learned what foods I'm allowed to eat at what times of day. I also learned to use my glucometer to take my blood sugar readings four times a day. Having gestational diabetes does put me at a higher risk of developing diabetes later in life, and also having gestational diabetes during future pregnancies so I will be tested annually for the rest of my life. What I learned in my class was that gestational diabetes is caused from pregnancy hormones put off by the placenta. Basically, there is no way I could have anticipated having gestational diabetes and there is no way I could have prevented it. After I have the baby my blood sugar should regulate itself again and I can go back to my regular diet and stop using my glucometer.

The diet eliminates most sugars besides fruit (which I can have 2 servings of per day) and helps ensure that carbs are balanced with protein at every meal and snack. I have followed the diet pretty well and after 2 weeks of pricking my finger four times a day my blood sugar readings all fell within the normal range. A perinatal nurse checks in with me every week and since my readings have been good I've been allowed to drop my testing to three days a week. I'm still following the diet every day but it's nice to not have to prick my fingers so much. Making sure baby is healthy is what is important, so I can curb my sweet tooth for another month. Untreated gestational diabetes can lead to problems during labor (big baby!) and can affect the baby's blood sugar and I don't want that!

In other news... I had my baby shower in August and it was awesome! I can't believe how generous our family and friends were. My mother-in-law did a great job setting up a tea party theme - very appropriate for a party for a baby girl. :) I also had my work shower which was super fun. We played a few games and had lunch and cake. Mmmm! Hubby came too so it wasn't just a girl thing which was nice.

Butterfly cupcakes!

Set up for tea

Me! About 30 weeks.

Since the showers hubby and I have been very busy in the new house working on the nursery. With little time to do many home improvement projects before baby arrives, we decided that we'd only work on her nursery. So far we've primed, painted, and installed a chair rail and baseboards. The once brown and ivory room is now pink and white and looks amazing (thanks to those who helped!). We've also set up all her furniture and hung curtains and blinds. Now I just need to work on the cutesy wall decorations and finish washing up all her clothes and blankets. Once it's done I'll post pictures. :)

My latest stats:

How far along? 35 weeks 2 days

Weight gain? not sure. I was up 26 lbs at my 31 week check up.

How big is baby? The pregnancy app says she's 18 inches long and over 5 lbs

Maternity clothes? Definitely. 24/7 pretty much besides pajamas

Food cravings? Well I really want pumpkin pie but with my gd diet I can't have any. :(

Labor signs? No but I'm getting more anxious. I think I've felt a few Braxton-Hicks but that's about it.

Stretch marks? Yes... they've arrived. :(  I noticed them a few weeks ago along the very bottom of my stomach and some little ones along my hips. Oh well...

How are you feeling? Still tired but I have waves where I'm determined to get stuff done no matter how much I want to nap or put my feet up.

What am I looking forward to? My last day of work this Friday! I also have my 36 week appointment next week and I always look forward to hearing my baby's heart beat!

What I miss? Eating whatever I want... The gd diet isn't really that bad but I do miss having sweets.

Sleep? Becoming more difficult. I wake up to use the bathroom and/or flip over or just because the baby's kicking.

Best moment this week? Watching the nursery finally come together. I can't wait to use all the baby stuff!

Today at 35 w 2 days
