November Resolutions

Throughout the year I go through cycles where things are good for a while, boring for a while, stressful for a while, and then it starts over. This is the cycle for work, working out, making time for dates with hubby, working on the house, hobbies, etc.

I think right now I’m in a boring work cycle. In general I like my job and enjoy my coworkers but I don’t think it’s a forever job. I make decent money and have flexible hours and plenty of perks but the actual work only uses about half my brainpower. I’m not in a big hurry to move on or go back to school or anything like that, but I have found myself wondering what’s next.

While work is slow I have been thinking about all the other things I could devote attention to, like getting in shape. Back in July I was feeling the pressure to look good. I was 9 months post-partum, it was summer, and I was anxious to be one of those women who look amazing and no one would guess they just had a baby. This worked for July. I ran 5 miles a week, I put on a bikini for a Fourth of July party, and I even wore my short jean shorts out in public on a few occasions. Then the August heat hit and it was too hot for me to jog while pushing honeybee in the stroller so I stopped running. Then we got busy, really busy. Hubby got sent to a bunch of teaching conferences, I started planning C’s first birthday party, our house projects had to get finished, and on and on.

So, now it’s November and I have time to devote to myself again. I can run on the weekends and do workouts at home during the week. I’ve started by curbing my after dinner sweet tooth and by taking oatmeal smoothies for breakfast instead of something processed or unbalanced.

I also want to devote more time to my hobbies. I used to enjoy scrapbooking and being crafty before I got pregnant. I would get all my papers, pictures, and supplies out and make a huge mess on the dining room table that wouldn’t get picked up for a week. Usually this would result in a few pages (or on one rare occasion an entire book!) to add to my latest scrapbook. Well, the hassle of it all really got to me so I stopped scrapping and starting making online photo books. So much easier and almost as much fun! I’ve also attempted a few DIY house projects (like my DIY curtain post from earlier this year) but the result is usually not up to my high standards and I end up tossing it.

I guess what I’m saying is that I need to figure out what I like doing again. I get distracted easily when I can’t figure something out and until I’m more motivated it just sits. Therefore, I have a few projects sitting in the office waiting for me. I started a DIY monogram frame months ago that is just sitting on a picture ledge with no monogram. I bought a nice fancy camera that I can only use on auto mode because the instruction manual is too intimidating. I have a dresser in the garage because I don’t want to refinish it but don’t know if I want to get rid of it either. I want to design a mudroom in the garage. I want to get curtains for the playroom. I want to organize our office. Since I’m not sure where to go with any of that it’s all just on hold. Until now! Now I can finish C’s photo book, print our latest family pics to hang in the hallway, and make decisions about how to proceed with the other projects.

Luckily, things are good with hubby and honeybee. They are amazing as usual. Honeybee is now running around the house and on the go all day long. She still loves bath time and books but is now fascinated by climbing the furniture, using silverware, kicking and rolling her ball, tickling belly buttons, and opening any and every door, drawer, and cupboard. She also says a few words, like “Uh oh” when she drops her sippy cup, or “cheese” when getting her picture taken, “baah” for bath, and then there’s Dada and Bye. She is just so incredible.
